What is the Armenian diaspora?

The term Armenian diaspora refers to the millions of Armenians living outside their homeland. Today, it is estimated that nearly 8 million Armenians live worldwide, while Armenia has a population of barely 3 million. This reality makes the diaspora a central pillar of contemporary Armenian identity.

The origins of dispersion

The Armenian diaspora was built through several waves of migration.

• The most tragic and significant remains that caused by the genocide of 1915 , during which 1.5 million Armenians were exterminated in the Ottoman Empire. Those who survived fled to the Middle East, Europe, America or Russia.

• Subsequently, other exiles took place due to political instability, the fall of the USSR, regional conflicts (notably in Nagorno-Karabakh), or even economic reasons.

A vibrant and engaged diaspora

The strength of the Armenian diaspora lies in its ability to preserve its culture despite the distance . Armenian schools, churches, cultural centers, sports and musical associations: in every major city in the world, the community organizes itself to transmit language, traditions and memory .

Cities like Los Angeles (the famous “Little Armenia”) , Paris , Beirut , Moscow , Montreal , or Buenos Aires are now home to dynamic, active communities proud of their roots.
